Problem Statement
Throughout the 1900s, there has been an exponential increase in population size. In 2000, the total population of the entire world was about 6,123,000,000 as opposed to in 1900 when it was about 1,570,000,000. The population had increased by about 5 billion in 100 years or 50,000,000 each year.
Right now, the total population growth rate of the world is 1.15% of last year’s population total. This means that if the population is 100,000,000,000 this year, next year, it would be 101,150,000,000 next year. That’s a 1,150,000,000 increase in population. This number could continue growing or decreasing exponentially depending on the population growth rate. The world population growth rate depends on the population growth rate of all countries. Some countries, like China, have passed laws in an effort to reduce their growth rate. Most other countries haven’t done anything to slow down the growth rate. In this lab, I am going to compare different countries population growth rate in order to find why some people are concerned about our growing population.
Process
First, I chose 5 different countries. The countries I chose are the United States, China, Nigeria, Philippines, and Russia. The reason I chose these countries was because of their economical standpoint, that they have laws limiting the population growth rate, their size, and a couple other reasons. Then I went to http://www.google.com/publicdata and researched their total population from 1960 to 2010 or a 50 year period. Next, I created a graph with my findings.

Then I went to http://www.google.com/publicdata and researched their total population from 1960 to 2010 or a 50 year period. Next, I created a graph with my findings.
I calculated the average population growth rate for all of the countries by adding up all of the different rates for the countries and dividing it by 6 or the number of data points per country. Then, I compared the different rates.
Solution
In the order of the country with the highest population growth rate to the lowest population growth rate, the Philippines had the highest population growth rate from 1960 to 2010 with an average population increase of 2.56%. Next is Nigeria with 2.44%, followed by China with 1.43% and the United States with 1.15%. Finally, the country with the lowest population growth rate is Russia.
Reflection
I feel that this lab was extremely open ended so I could of done something different like compared the increase in people rather than in percentage. I also could of got the increase by year instead of by decade. I feel that, by doing this, it could of made my findings more accurate.
